... chance for MacBeth to become king. Macbeth decides, "The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on which I fall down, or else o'er leap..." (Act I scene 4 line 55). This delineates MacBeth's character and begins to show his ill feelings as to how he will act on these prophecies. King Duncan is invited to MacBeth's castle at Inverness where MacBeth will decide what actions to take to become King of Scotland. Before MacBeth returns to Inverness, he writes a letter to Lady MacBeth telling her of the strange prophecies. Ill thoughts are immediately stirred up in her mind, and her greed and ambition show that MacBeth will be king. "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be what thou art prom ...
... far from the surface. Do we ever undeniably know the truth about someone, a situation or ourselves? In "Much Ado About Nothing", everyone is pretentious. Don Pedro deceives Hero by acting the part of an honest friend, concerned for his brother and Claudio's honour. Leonato and his family act as if Hero were dead, encouraged to this deception by, of all people, the Friar who feels that deception may be the way to get at truth and all the main characters in the plot pretend to Benedick and Beatrice so convincingly that they reverse their normal attitudes to each other. In scene I.1 Don Pedro offers to play Claudio and win Hero for him. But, this plan is overheard, and misreported ...
... on his hands; which leads me to the conclusion that blood was a much more powerful symbol than water in this play. In Macbeth, light and dark was used in a classic sense. Light symbolized all that is good, and it is no coincidence that when a scene included Banquo or another of the innocent victims in this play, the setting was bright. On the other hand, when a scene involved murder or the supernatural, such as the scenes involving the witches, a dark setting was used. The strange acting animals which were spoken of periodically during the play were used to symbolize chaos. When Duncan was murdered, Shakespeare used these irate animals to show that something horrible and irreconcilab ...
... our drift, and hither shall he come; and he and I shall watch thy waking, and that very night shall Romeo bear thee to Mantua." (Act 4, Scene 1), he tells Juliet how everything will be all right. Unfortunately, for all his good intentions the play still ends in tragedy. Friar Lawrence is a man who is not afraid to take risks when he feels it is neccesary to help someone. For example in Act 2, Scene 6, when he marries Romeo and Juliet, he is risking his reputation as a Friar so he can help the two lovers. Also, when he says "Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink though off;" (Act 4, Scene 1), he is suggesting that Juliet drink a potion so ...
... the village and witchcraft is deemed culpable. This galvanized quite a disturbance in the village and the girls start making accusations about who is practicing witchcraft. The girls claim in court that they have all been witnesses to these terrible acts and can see the devil inside individuals. The culpability of these devilish occurrences fluctuate drastically and the girls conclude that they would keep their intentions a secret and inculpate one by one other residents of the village. However, Abigail’s true intention in accusing village residents is to earn another relationship with John Proctor after a recent affair by accusing his wife which would lead to her hanging. Abig ...
... play makes extensive use of music, with Ariel's songs and Prospero's charms as well as the "sweet airs" of the island itself. Being non-human, Caliban, Ariel and the spirits require elaborate costume to make them appear so, and the court party members are decked in their finest court apparel, having just been at Claribel's wedding, so that Miranda is taken aback by the "brave new world / That hath such creatures in't" on seeing them. The elements of pastoral comedy in The Tempest are also linked to those of the masque. A natural man, Caliban, exists. So do a pair of noble young lovers, Ferdinand and Miranda, who are brought together in the pastoral setting of an island, unaffected by t ...
... MacBeth is quite overwhelmed when he hears that he is now the Thane of Cawdor. However, almost immediately, he starts thinking about how to bring about his rule as king. "{Aside} Two truths are told, As happy prologues to the swelling act Of the imperial theme.—I thank you, gentlemen. {Aside} This supernatural soliciting Cannot be ill, cannot be good. If ill, Why hath it given me earnest of success, Commencing in a truth? I am the thane of Cawdor. If good, why do I yield to that suggestion Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature? P ...
... of school shootings that will probably never reach the amount of coverage that Columbine got because school shootings are no longer a novelty. Do you wonder why these kids did what they did? It is because of the amount of violence that is now being shown all across the news. In one weeks worth of time of watching the ten o’clock news, I have seen blood drenched war victims give A.B.C news anchors their last words before slipping into a coma. Five days ago, a neighborhood gang interrupted a high school student’s routine walk home by beating him to within an inch of his life. When he was asked if he would reveal the names of the assaulters, guess who was bedside with a camera to captu ...
... showing determination and courage to enable her to hide her anguish, and talk calmly with Paris at the Friar*s cell. Juliet is forced by a series of crises to grow up rapidly, and we can see her gathering strength to face each one. Juliets father, the Old Capulet, startled by the rebellion of Juliet who had been an obedient, beloved, and his only child treats her with cruelty. Juliet*s mother, Lady Capulet, abandons Juliet. And her last hope, the Nurse, advises her to betray her husband. She doesn*t have her family, friends nor husband to support her "My dismal scene I nee ...
... used something like inferred humor to get across some other meanings that added to the play. One good example is the character of Puck. Puck is a hyperactive child that gets into a lot of mischief. His attitude toward his tasks is sort of a light and airy one. He does not take life seriously, he only does what is fun. This type of character is totally different than everyone else in the play; they are in a serious tone, while Puck is just dancing around pulling pranks on everyone. One good example of a prank that Puck created was putting an Ass' head on Bottom. It was unnecessary, just fun. What made him funny was these sort of pranks, and the contrast of his attitude toward the oth ...
