... Waldseemuller coined the word "America" in Cosmographiae Introductio, a small work designed to accompany and explain a wall map and globe executed by Waldseemuller. In this work two names were suggested for the "fourth part" of the world, one Amerige (pronounced A-mer-i-gay with the -ge from the Greek, meaning "earth"), and the other America (in the feminine form, parallel to Europa and Asia). The latter form was placed on Waldseemuller's maps of 1507, and their wide circulation brought about the gradual adoption of the name. Waldseemuller was aware of only South America as a continent, but Gerhardies Mercator thirty years later extended the designation to both continents. Paradoxi ...
... went to a family estate in Euboea. He died there the following year. Aristotle, like Plato, used his dialogue in his beginning years at the Academy. Apart from a few fragments in the works of later writers, his dialogues have been wholly lost. Aristotle also wrote some short technical writings, including a dictionary of philosophic terms and a summary of the "doctrines of Pythagoras" (the guy from the Pythagorean Theorem). Of these, only a few short pieces have survived. Still in good shape, though, are Aristotle's lecture notes for carefully outlined courses treating almost every type of knowledge and art. The writings that made him famous are mostly these, which were collected by other e ...
... a lower cost approach to substantiate accuracy -- this is important to both the auditing firm and the industry being audited.Another industry that utilizes statistics on a daily basis is the insurance industry. In fact, this industry relies on statistics to help forecast its bottom line results. The typical insurance company uses statistics to determine approval rates for clients, while providing coverage (life, medical, dental, etc.) and turning a profit. For example, an insurance company might use statistical concepts to determine the trend of a population. This statistical approach might be used to determine the likelihood of a population incurring extreme medical needs, birth rates, or ...
... to children to measure academic progress) than private or public schooled children. Homeschooled children outperform other students by 30-37 percentile points in all subjects. In grades 1-4, children perform an average of one grade level higher. In 5th grade, the gap begins to widen and by 8th grade, they average four grade levels ahead. Family race and income, child’s gender, and parent’s education does not seem to affect the test scores for homeschooled children as it does for public and private school children. Among white homeschooled children, the average reading score percentile was 87 and math was 82. In minority students, it was 87 in reading and 77 in math. Their white cou ...
... 3. Acquired fairly, as in honest money 4. Open; sincere, as in an honest face 5. Genuine or unadulterated, as in honest commodities 6. Truthful; creditable; candid” Therefore, one can, by reading the definition above, assume the definition of ‘honest’ to be fair, truthful, trustworthy, earned fairly. Another example would be: You are at a supermarket check out counter and you are paying for ice-cream, bread, fish, ham, and bacon which comes to a total of $43. It is your turn to pay and you hand the girl at the counter a $50 note. However, she is colour blind and carelessly mistakes your $50 note for a $100 note. She then hands you a big wad of bank notes as change. There is al ...
... me that surveys are not the most accurate means of finding your experiment. When trying to conduct a survey there are so many variables to cope with it is incredible. My group showed ways around surveys in that it is easy to prove your point; you just give the survey to who agrees with you. Surveys are black and white and if you draw a conclusion from one, it may not be accurate and most likely is not. A group also did their experiment using an observation method. Using this method is very difficult to use especially when given this little of time. When observing a group of people it is vital to watch every person the whole time otherwise your conclusion will be a very general stateme ...
... old stars die, new stars are created. This is like losing the "old feelings" a person used to have. Yet at the same time, new affection develops. Furthermore, changes in the galaxy are very subtle; in the identical fashion, love matures in a delicate, but in a very precise way. It takes a very long time for the universe to change the way it looks from Earth's point of view; as a result, in our lifetime, we can detect very little alteration in the galaxy. With love, it also takes a while for a man to realize this feeling, because, at a conscious level, he may not be paying close attention to all of his emotions. Also, love is like the appearance of the cosmos at night: it is beautiful, and ...
... as the gateway to reach heaven. Where they will have no wants, everything you ever wanted is there. They also see the process of death as an act of God, for it is said that “only God can start a life and only God can take it away.” (Euthanasia…)The Islamic religion sees it the same way. Other beliefs across the globe have different theories. Hindus say that the spirit undergoes a form of reincarnation. So for many Hindus, death is a welcome event. A chance for them to enter the world anew, and escape the old. For them death truly is an awakening. For others though, it is an escape for many people, with religious beliefs or not, just want to die. This can be for many reasons. Either th ...
... genius daughter), and Maggie (silent baby). The show also revolves around a number of other of the townsfolk, such as Mr Burns (Homer's miserly boss), Smithers (Burns's loving assistant), Apu (Indian shop owner), Principal Skinner and Moe (owner of the local bar). There are a number of reasons why we cannot simply view The Simpsons as a cartoon like any other. The rules and conventions that it follows are far more those of television or cinema than those of animation. The humour within The Simpsons exists on many different levels ranging from the obvious to the subtle, from the literary to the movie reference, and beyond. But most importantly we must consider the show's ability to m ...
... be no need to worry about getting stopped for speeding or dangerous driving. If you are at school you could forget all about learning and play games all day long. It does sound like a good life but would such a system work in reality? If you spend any time thinking about it then you must come to the conclusion that life would be more difficult without rules rather than easier. For example, imagine there were no rules regulating what side of the road you drive on, you decide for yourself when you wake up in the morning. Would you take a chance driving down a motorway in such a society when someone could be coming straight at you at 70 mph? How long would shops stay open if we were not o ...
