... to this great American tradition. Volunteering my hours made me feel like I was part of something important. Mostly my work consisted of random polling. I would call people up between the hours of 7 and 9 P.M. and ask them a few questions about the election. With every call I hoped for the best, but it seemed that I was calling people at the time they were most irritable. Most would simply hang up, leaving with a polite "Oh, I'm not interested." Others acted militantly to my calling, slamming the phone in disgust. It startled and in a way disheartened me, the way many of the people I polled seemed totally apathetic to the political world around us. To me, spending a mi ...
... are large numbers of homeless teens, they still remain lacking in many services. One of the most important services is education. This journal article focuses on the barriers to educating homeless teens and mechanisms that are being created to assist in helping them to survive. Education is severely affected by homelessness. Most homeless adolescents do not attend school because they are unable to make it to school every day. This, in turn, causes teens to fall behind or fail classes. This causes them to end up dropping out of school. Schools are unable to help the homeless teen. Instead, they cause the teen more frustration and depression, thus encouraging them to stay away from e ...
... it was no longer needed by the Army. In 1988 the Presidio was slated for closure by a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closures) commission and thus began the transfer of property to the National Park Service. In June of 1995 the Sixth U.S. Army marched out the Presidio, ending almost 219 years of military presence in the city. By September 30, 1995 all Army Facilities were transferred to the National Park Service. is the first of its kind in the United States. With the closing of many military bases this seems to be an effective allocation of the land. But as with any National Park the Presidio has its fair share of problems. The main on being the extensive cleanup that was needed to ...
... during the red scare. The early 1950's was a time of emotional stress for much of the United States. With the USSR and the USA emerging from the second World War as major world powers, neither wished to give up their newly acquired land. Both countries following imperialist ideas attempted to spread their government across the world. America, insecure about its power to uphold a democratic government in foreign nations feared a communist invasion from their Cold War foe, Russia. A hysteria swept across the United States as American paranoia of a loss of personal rights increased. President Harry Truman's thoughts summed up the nation's feelings toward communists with, "Th ...
... disparity and inequality exist. (Chomsky 1994) A known phrase from the American Declaration of Independence states that ‘all men are created equal.’ This statement assumes that at birth we all enter the world with the same abilities and that it is our environment in life that shapes what kind of people we will eventually become. Thus, it is arguable that because all men are created equal, all men have the equal opportunity to succeed, at least in today’s modern times. The reason that economic disparity surfaces is because some do not choose the path of education and thus create a difference in skill and talent between themselves and those who chose to attend school, university, or an ...
... socially, and economically, matrimony between lesbian and gay couples should be accepted in the United States. Because our country has been founded on the Constitution, in which all men are created equal; we cannot deny the basic human and legal right of marriage to a class of individuals due to their sexual preference. Banning same-sex marriage has already been declared a violation of the constitution in the state of Hawaii. The case began in 1991 when three same-sex couples who had been denied marriage licenses, by the Hawaii Department of Health, brought a lawsuit to the state court against the director of the department. Hawaii law required couples wishing to marry Ramirez 2 to obtain ...
... sentenced. From Miranda rights to the right of free council the steps must be followed in order to insure a fair trial for the accused. This process is well defined for everyone involved in the case. Although this process has steps that some may see as trivial, it must be followed in order to prosecute effectively. Crime control method is at the other end of the spectrum of the law. Crime control model is based on the idea that some of the accused are obviously guilty and however the evidence is obtained is irrelevant as long as the right subject is imprisoned. The model is time and cost effective and also would prevent criminals from slipping through the cracks of our justice system ...
... political battles of Adam's term this orderly exchange of power seemed impossible to ever achieve but this election proved all the skeptics wrong. The Revolution of 1800 was so named by the winner of the 1800 election, Thomas Jefferson. He called this election a revolution because his party, the Republicans, peacefully and orderly received the power with nothing but acceptance by the federalists. This was how the founding fathers designed the government to be. It was revolutionary for America because this was not even achieved in England until a full generation later and this country was only a little over 20 years old. Other countries began to look up to a respect, maybe even cop ...

For multiple sclerosis, it helps reduce tremors, stops muscle spasms, and restores bladder control, speech and eyesight, and balance (Medicinal 1). These facts show that is very useful in the medical field and should be legalized for medical and health purposes only. For some purposes, is not so bad of a drug as some people claim to think. All drugs, from prescription to over the counter, carry different amounts of risks to the person taking them. The active ingredient in Tylenol, Acetaminophen, must be filtered out of the blood. An excessive use of Tylenol could also result in the damage of the liver. ...
... The British in India know that they will suffer if they push the Indians too far. This fact is why the British do not do anything when the Indians harass them. Orwell’s lack of power, as an authority figure, is seen when he says, “When a nimble Burman tripped me up on the football field and the referee (another Burman) looked the other way, the crowd yelled with hideous laughter”. He can do nothing about the Burmans harassment. He also says the Burmans laugh and “jeer” at him all day long. He can do nothing because there are so many Indians and so few British in India. Orwell says, “No one had the guts to raise a riot, . . .”. None of the Burmans needed to riot because the British w ...
