... gardens filled with cactus plants and rock gardens which resembled Mount Fujiyama (100). Both the Cubans and the Japanese were deemed less than American. The Cubans were acceptable as long as they did not assert their hotness, nor their Cubanness on the street under a shady palm tree(136), or hold a prominent position in Anglo Miami. The Japanese Americans were bearable as long as they were locked up. The public anger at the "treachery" of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor left many fearing disloyalty and sabotage (98). Although both cultures were deemed unacceptable by Anglo-American society, the Japanese Americans and the Cubans went about setting up their lives as if they were in t ...
... kill an unbuckled child who is sitting too close to the air bag or who is thrown toward the dash during emergency braking or a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified 86 crashes where the deployment of the passenger air bag resulted in fatal head or neck injuries to a child. Eighteen of these deaths were to infants in rear-facing child safety seats. Most of the other 68 children were determined to be completely unbuckled, or wearing only the lap portion of the safety belt at the time of the crash (Kids and Airbags). To prevent these fatalities, NHTSA passed a rule in 1996 which requires vehicles with air bags to bear three new warning labels (Martinez-4 ...
... fact that men were more accepting of the idea that women belonged in the work place, but rather men were drown to the higher paying and more socially appreciated managerial jobs brought on by the industrial revolution. School boards did not mind these talented leaving because they could higher a "less qualified women" for as low as one fifth of males salary for the same job. Susan B. Anthony was the first women to publicly speak out against this gross injustice towards women. After being fired to "replace a male teacher fired for incompetence, she was paid one third of the salary he had received,"(Reifert 74)she went to the state teachers convention of 1853 to register a protest. ... children who are accused of minor delinquencies or refer them directly to their parents. But in other communities, the police may refer such children to a juvenile court, where they may officially be declared delinquents. Crime statistics, though they are often incomplete and may be misleading, do give an indication of the extent of the delinquency problem. The FBI reports that during the early 1980's, about two-fifths of all arrests in the United States for burglary and arson were of persons under the age of 18. Juveniles also accounted for about one-third of all arrests for larceny. During any year, about 4 % of all children between the ages of 10 and 18 appear in a juvenil ...
... jobs. Although these are important factors they are not strong enough to make kids do things that are strongly against their morals. One of the ways that kids morals are bent so that gang violence becomes more acceptable is the influence of television and movies. The average child spends more time at a TV than she/he spends in a classroom. Since nobody can completely turn off their minds, kids must be learning something while watching the TV. Very few hours of television watched by children are educational, so other ideas are being absorbed during this period of time. Many shows on television today are extremely violent and are often shown this from a gang’s perspective. A normal ad ...
... to be violent and the effects can be life- long. The information can't be ignored. Violent television viewing does affect children. The effects have been seen in a number of cases. In New York, a 16-year-old boy broke into a cellar. When the police caught him and asked him why he was wearing gloves he replied that he had learned to do so to not leave fingerprints and that he discovered this on television. In Alabama, a nine-year-old boy received a bad report card from his teacher. He suggested sending the teacher poisoned candy as revenge as he had seen on television the night before. In California, a seven-year-old boy sprinkled ground-up glass into the the lamb stew the f ...
... against. The numbers of women who have entered the work force has gone up sufficiently and they have obtained the same types of jobs as men, such as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. Unfortunately, women’s wages still don’t compare to men’s wages as they should. Often times, men are paid more money when they do the same job as women. Women are continuing their action to equalize themselves. There are many things women are doing to put themselves on the same level as men. Women have set up organizations such as the National Organization for Women as I mentioned before. Mothers are stepping into the full-time workforce, while husbands sometimes stay at home with the children. Schools ...
... care of the children, clean the house, and cook. Because society has always associated money with power, the person bringing home the money had the power. The man often makes the f inal decision on all household matters because he has the money. The workplace is another place where men and women are not equal. The most obvious sign starts at the top. Look at CEOs of corporation; the majority of which are men. Women serving as CEOs are a rare sight. Another sign of the unfairness can also be found in the lower ranks. Men are often applauded for being assertive and giving orders. By giving orders, men are taking a leadership role. Demonstrating leadership ability is a quality that ...
... and therefore an agent of the devil. I disagree totally with that assessment. Just because someone is pro-choice or doesn't attend church regularly doesn't mean he is not a good Christian. I thought the teachings of Jesus encouraged tolerance and forgiveness, not persecution. For instance, these groups preach "family values", with the father working, the mother cooking and cleaning, and the kids being subservient to their parents. I am surprised more women don't find this sexist and offensive. Roles in each individual family are, and should be, different. People should adapt to life based on their individual talents, not on what extremist politicians tell them to do ...
... It is less of an issue now but definitely still exists. Many male police officers don’t want women on the force and don’t believe that they can perform the job as well as men can. This makes it harder on women who want to become police officers. Police also harass teenagers the same way they do blacks and other minorities. Police often take advantage of younger people by doing illegal procedures to get the kids in trouble. Younger people don’t know their rights as well as older people do, and the police use this to their own advantage. What effect do these prejudices have on society and their view of the police force? When police abuse their power and harass people for racist reasons, ...
