... can do nothing with the evidence. With the publishing of the "Dear Boss" letter sparking even more public interest in the crimes, the Financial News offers a further 300 pounds toward the award for the capture of the murderer. On top of that the Lord Mayor offers his own 500 pound reward. Sir Alfred Kirby offers a 100 pound reward and fifty militia men to help apprehend the criminal. His offer was declined. Queen Victoria herself telephones the Home Office at 3:30 pm that day to express her shock at the murders, but does nothing else. Later that day the "Saucy Jack" postcard is received by the Centeral news service and is published by the Star in the evening edition. The handwriting ...
... to his family, as Aeneas is considering the request he notices that Turnus is wearing the sword belt of Pallas and the stoic ways of Aeneas leave him as rage, fury, and anger run through his body. He kills Turnus in anger and dedicates his death to Pallas. This loss of control and act of violence is the opposite of stoicism and the way Aeneas had been portrayed the rest of the epic. Turnus has to die for the founding of Rome to occur but he should not have been killed in such a way. The killing was payback for the dishonorable way that Pallas was killed. The sword belt had images that reflect Augustinian Rome as did the shield in book eight. The theft of the belt from Pallas can be ...
... and "Able". Angel, for it appears in the sky after Governor Winthrop's death. Able, for Hester has won the respect of the Puritans even if she has sinned terribly. Hawthorne uses the prison building to describe crime and punishment in contrast with the tombstone at the end of the novel. This statement suggests the crime and punishment will eventually lead to the death of the malefactor. One positive symbol is the rosebush outside the prison. I feel it represents a sweet person hidden in the encasements of a dark prison, a true diamond in the rough. The symbol for Puritanism, according to one critic, is when Hawthorne uses the beadle. I can see how the Puritans are co ...
... with the society in general is characterized by his indiscriminate choice of victims. These victims range from a police officer to an innocent black man looking out his window, to several citizens who try to put an end to his madness. This conflict is stopped when the mob catches up to him, and he surrenders in soldier-like fashion. The hint of the conflict lingers, however, when the mob leader brags about killing a big one. The third and most interesting and complex type of conflict in this story is the intrapersonal conflict within Dick. He shows two very distinct sides which seem to intertwine at times. In the early going, he is portrayed as friendly and polite. He is depict ...
... the mountain, fire is created, but only through the use of Piggy's glasses. After Jack goes off to hunt and comes back, Ralph discusses the problems of people not working with Jack. Simon goes into the jungle alone and contemplates. The boys become used to the daily tasks on the island. The small children play all the time while the older ones do most of the work. The first flash of Jack's future warrior/hunter position as leader is shown as he comes back to camp with his face painted. A ship is spotted, but they find that the signal fire on the mountain has gone out, and the ship passes them by. Jack finally kills a pig, but Piggy criticizes him. In return, Jack slaps Piggy and breaks on ...
... A huge portion of the story revolves about Dr.Manette's past suffering in the Bastille. The Doctors Bastille time is pure hell. Ever after being freed he still mumbles crazy things such as It is a lady's shoe. It is a young lady's walking-shoe. It is in the present mode. I have had a pattern in my hand.3 Outbursts such as that show that he is not nor may he ever heal his scars. Though the book starts after his imprisonment, his Bastille time contains his actions that effects the stories plot the most. The action that truly stands out is his writing and hiding of the letter that later convicts Charles Darnay. The exposure of the letter during the trail is in my opinion the most in ...
... her mind jumps back to reality. In astonishment, she clutches the child and places her finger on the scarlet letter. This shows that reality is unavoidable, even though we try to escape from it sometimes. This courageous journey to reality won my admiration and understanding. When I was eight years old, I distinctly remember the time when our family celebrated the Chinese New Year. Since I was still young and didn't have much manners, I had to sit alone on a separate table. The more I saw the adults enjoying themselves, the more furious I got. However, I felt helpless for I couldn't do anything about it. Then, I saw my aunt rising from her chair to get a bowl of soup from t ...
... ideas on the qualities of a "modern tragedy" means also changing the qualities of a "modern tragic hero". A tragic hero is someone with the dedication to die for a belief, but also someone who has a tragic flaw or limitation that defines him as a character and makes the tragedy happen. Willy is intense and passionate and cares about his dream enough to sacrifice his life to it. He has alternatives, but he chooses to live in a certain way that brings about his downfall that is the difference between Willy and his salesman neighbour Charley who chooses other ways of achieving success. As soon as Death of a Salesman opened, critics began writing about its relation to Greek trage ...
... Gatsby thought she was in the past. From Gatsby's illusions of the past preoccupying all his thoughts, he forgets about the key dimension he exists in which is the present. Although Gatsby was persistent on reliving the past, Gatsby vaguely lived for the present. This is apparent when he cancels his biology by leaving home, changing his name, and leaving his heritage behind which was not done by following the past. In the past Jay Gatsby made, "...a platonic conception of himself". What Nick said about Gatsby's platonic theory of himself was that Gatsby "...was a son of God". From Jay Gatsby's theory he makes a ideal conception of himself, of which he projects himself into the f ...
... within often count their casualties, but seldom see a cure. The diseases that afflict the family in A Child Called "It" is that of alcoholism and an undefined mental illness. The problem with a mental illness in the family is two-fold. In our society, we have an attitude of, "don't ask, and if you do find out, then don't get involved. It's none of your business." That is to say that many are reluctant to enter the world of another family because they think that it is not their place and that any problems will be dealt with by the family itself. Another problem with mental illness in the family is that the family itself tries to protect itself from those outside from interfering. This ...
