... never an alternative. Women's lives were austere and self enrichment or self gratification were often times cast aside relative to the more mundane tasks of daily life. Most women accepted this but Edna did not. She figured that life was more than constantly doing for someone else. She wanted time for herself in order to figure out who she was. Edna's marriage to Leonce Pontellier was to spite her father the Colonel because Leonce was of a different religious faith. Also, Leonce was unceasin ...
... to express humanity, the whole plot was some kind of an irony. Something like a metaphor, though she exaggerated everything to make it poignant enough. Not only were the characters a success, the time and place details were incredible. The costumes, ways of manner, history and every background changes as the years passed, and she made the backgrounds so realistic that I could almost feel everything surrounding me. Actually I think Anne Rice had done such a great job that this book should be counted as literature. After reading the last line of this novel, I was both stunned and fascinated, but somehow quite disturbed. It really took me some time and thoughts to understand the whol ...
... kind of speaks for it self. That was exactly how the bomb was. No one saw anything or heard anything but a flash. The first chapter speaks about how people are wondering why they are alive, but their next door neighbors aren't. It was weird, there could be a house right in the middle of two houses; the one in the middle survived the bomb but the other two did not. A whole neighborhood could be wiped out except for a few houses. Why those houses did not get knocked down, no one knows. The second chapter is called "The Fire." This chapter is about how the explosion caused many fires. The fires were spread everywhere because of the high winds. Many of the people were burned and buried ...

The price that a student pays when they go into the classroom [sic] to exchange any form of humiliation or degradation in exchange for their education - period." For what reason would a student be ashamed or feel degraded to read such a novel? It would be more understandable if slavery was still part of our lives today and black people were still being called niggers and going through the same hardships as in the past. However, black people now a days call each other niggers more than a light skinned person calls a dark skinned person one. And, in most cases black people are the least discriminated with this whol ...
... her eyebrows to get his attention. Mme. Defarge said nothing...but coughed just one grain of cough. This, in combination with lifting her darkly defined eyebrows suggesting to her husband that it would do him well to look around the shop.(pg. 28). The reader, at this point, becomes aware of the same secrecy between the Defarges but is unsure why. Charles Dickens certainly used the wine shop to install an element of secrecy in the novel. He shows that certain individuals are required to lead a secret life just to stay alive. He shows this when Mr. Monette is hidden away in the attic. Often you will see in novels that the author has chosen to experiment with the reader's minds. In t ...
... ground to bleed. Well, last I pulled out some of my hair, and bloodied the ax good, and stuck it on the back side, and slung the ax in the corner" (24). If Huck were lazy, he would not have gone through all that trouble to escape, if he escaped at all. A lazy person would have just stayed there and not worried about what happened. At another point in the novel, Huck and a runaway slave, Jim, are on an island where they think they will not get caught. Huck decides to go to town to get information dressed as a girl. "So we shortened up one of the calico gowns and I turned up my trouser-legs to my knees and got into it. I put on the sun-bonnet and tied it under my chin. I practiced aro ...

His transformation could mean how society can compare him to a cockroach for his giving up on them and treat him as if he was less than human. Gregor has obviously had a life of hard labor at a job that he finds to be unbearable; as he states "Oh, God what an exhausting job I've picked" (P862 Ph4). He feels that he must work though. He feels that his family is incapable of supporting themselves. His mother has asthma, his father is old, and his sister is very young.
